Vitex Agnus-Castus, or Chaste Tree, shows hormone type activity but is itself not a hormone. It helps to regulate the menstrual cycle and may assist in the symptomatic relief of irregular periods. Its effects derive from its ability to maintain a normal balance of oestrogen and progesterone in the body. Research undertaken in Germany in the 1960’s indicated that Vitex works via the pituitary gland, maintaining a healthy balance of luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in the body as well as normal prolactin levels.
